Banksy - Spy Booth
Telephone booth - a symbol of privacy. Though in this context, the privacy shown is a farce.
The picture shows three men surrounding a telephone booth with various recording instruments. Though their clothes, it can be deduced that they are from an agency. Since they are recording the conversation in the booth, they are most likely from the government - an organisation that is most suspected of breaching civilians' privacy. The men have stoic, expressionless faces - common adjectives used to describe the government as a heartless organization. They wear eyeglasses - a symbol of secrecy. Not many know what happens inside such organisations. The mural is drawn using four colours: black, white, grey and ochre. The viewer's attention is drawn to their coats and sunglasses - another allusion to their profession.
Irony:
A Banksy mural mocking British government surveillance activity is drawn kilometres from the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ). The booth symbolises personal privacy - the very element that is being mocked in this picture.
Symbolism:
Three spies wearing trench coats and sunglasses- probably a symbol of their secrecy.
Listening devices to tap into conversations at an actual public telephone box
